Woodworm & Wood Rot Treatments
Timber is an important part of many homes, from roof timbers and floor joists to beams, staircases and joinery. Over time, however, timber can be affected by wood-boring insects, wet rot or dry rot, potentially causing deterioration and, in more serious cases, compromising the strength of structural timber.
At Harding Homes Building & Preservation, we believe that timber problems should be properly identified before treatment is recommended. A few holes in a floorboard do not necessarily mean you have an active woodworm infestation, just as damaged timber does not automatically mean you have dry rot.
The cause, extent and condition of the timber all need to be considered.
What is woodworm?
“Woodworm” is the common term used for the larvae of wood-boring beetles. It is the larvae, rather than the adult beetle, that tunnel through timber and cause the damage.
One of the most common species found in UK homes is the Common Furniture Beetle (Anobium punctatum). Other species include the Deathwatch Beetle, House Longhorn Beetle and Powderpost Beetle. Different species have different characteristics, preferred timber and life cycles, so identifying the type of infestation can help determine the appropriate treatment.
Signs of woodworm
Common signs can include:
- Small round flight or exit holes in timber
- Fine bore dust, known as frass
- Visible beetles or larvae
- Damaged or weakened timber
- Tunnels beneath the timber surface
- Fresh dust appearing beneath holes
However, the presence of holes alone does not necessarily prove that woodworm is currently active. Flight holes can remain visible for many years after an infestation has finished. Fresh frass and other evidence of activity can be more useful when assessing whether treatment is required.
Common types of wood-boring beetle
Common Furniture Beetle
The Common Furniture Beetle is the most frequently encountered wood-boring beetle in UK properties.
It can affect both softwood and hardwood and is commonly associated with older timber. The adult beetle leaves relatively small, round exit holes, while the larvae can spend several years developing within the timber.
Treatment may involve an appropriate insecticidal timber treatment to exposed affected timber, together with addressing any underlying conditions that may be encouraging the infestation.
Deathwatch Beetle
Deathwatch Beetle is particularly associated with older buildings and hardwood timbers, including oak. It can be found in structural timbers and is often associated with timber affected by damp or fungal decay.
The beetle gets its unusual name from the tapping or ticking sound sometimes produced by the adult beetle.
Because infestations can develop within substantial structural timbers, specialist assessment is important where Deathwatch Beetle is suspected.
House Longhorn Beetle
House Longhorn Beetle is less common but can cause significant damage to softwood structural timbers.
It is particularly associated with parts of southern England and can create extensive galleries within timber. Where this species is suspected, a detailed assessment of affected and surrounding structural timbers is important.
Dry & Wet Rot
Wood rot treatments
Unlike woodworm, wood rot is caused by fungal decay, not insects.
The two terms most commonly used are wet rot and dry rot. Although both involve fungal decay, they behave differently and require the underlying moisture conditions to be understood.
Wet rot
Wet rot generally develops where timber has remained exposed to excessive moisture.
It can occur around:
- Leaking gutters and downpipes
- Roof defects
- Plumbing leaks
- Damp walls
- Poor ventilation
- Defective external joinery
- Areas where timber is in prolonged contact with moisture
The timber may become discoloured, softened, cracked or crumbly, depending on the type and extent of decay.
The most important part of treating wet rot is dealing with the source of moisture. Simply replacing or treating the timber without correcting the underlying damp problem can allow the decay to return. Historic England specifically recommends addressing water ingress and allowing affected timber to dry before deciding what further remedial work is required.
Dry rot
Dry rot is a fungal decay that can cause serious deterioration of timber.
Despite its name, dry rot still requires moisture to establish and develop. Early dry rot can be difficult to distinguish from other forms of timber decay, and specialist investigation may be required where the diagnosis is uncertain.
Signs can include:
- Cracked or brittle timber
- Deep cuboidal cracking
- A dry, weakened appearance
- Fine fungal growth
- Mycelium within affected areas
- Fruiting bodies in more advanced cases
Because dry rot can be difficult to diagnose in its early stages, identifying the source of moisture and determining the full extent of the affected area are important parts of the investigation.
How are woodworm and timber decay treated?
There isn't a single treatment that is appropriate for every timber problem.
Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include:
1. Identification and assessment
The first step is establishing whether the timber is affected by an active wood-boring insect infestation, fungal decay, historic damage or a combination of problems.
2. Moisture control
Where damp is contributing to timber deterioration, the source of moisture needs to be identified and addressed. This could involve repairs to roofing, gutters, pointing, plumbing, ventilation or other parts of the building.
3. Timber treatment
Where active woodworm is confirmed, an appropriate professional timber treatment may be applied to affected timber. The treatment selected should take account of the insect species, timber type, accessibility and extent of the infestation.
4. Timber repair or replacement
Timber that has lost significant strength may need to be repaired, strengthened or replaced. The extent of replacement should be based on the actual condition of the timber rather than simply assuming that every piece of timber showing signs of damage needs to be removed.
5. Ongoing protection
Once the underlying cause has been dealt with, maintaining suitable moisture levels, ventilation and building condition can help reduce the risk of future timber problems.
Why professional diagnosis matters
One of the most important parts of timber treatment is understanding what you are actually looking at.
Old woodworm holes can remain in perfectly sound timber, while damp conditions can create an environment where both fungal decay and wood-boring insects become more likely.
For this reason, we don't believe that every hole should automatically result in chemical treatment or timber replacement. The condition of the timber, evidence of current activity and underlying causes should all be considered.
